H4 vs H19: What Is the Difference and Which Do You Need?
5 min readBy Gear Hub Editorial
They look similar at a glance but are not interchangeable. Here is how to tell them apart and identify which one your car uses.
## The short answer
H4 and H19 are different sockets and cannot be swapped. H4 is a three-pin bulb that has been the industry standard for decades. H19 is a newer nine-pin design introduced on modern vehicles with more compact headlamp assemblies.
## Physical differences
| Feature | H4 | H19 |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Pins | 3 | 9 |
| Base | Wider, flat tabs | Narrower, keyed |
| Typical use | Older hatchbacks, sedans | 2020+ hatchbacks, compact SUVs |
| Beam function | High and low in one bulb | High and low in one bulb |
## How to identify yours
The fastest method is to pull the existing bulb and count the pins. Three flat blades means H4. A cluster of nine smaller pins means H19.
If you cannot access the bulb easily, check the owner manual under the bulb replacement chart, or look up your exact model year in our vehicle compatibility tool.
## Which performs better?
Neither socket is inherently brighter. Performance comes down to the bulb design, not the base. What matters is that you buy an LED engineered specifically for your socket, because H19 bulbs adapted from H4 designs place the chips slightly off, and that shows up as a fuzzy beam cutoff.
