Car chargers that keep up with modern phones
A car charger converts your car's 12V supply into the USB power your phone, dashcam or tablet expects. Older 5V-only chargers still work, but they will trickle-charge a modern phone that is simultaneously running navigation, music and a hotspot. A charger that supports fast-charging protocols is what actually gains you battery while you drive.
What to look for
Output, not just port count
Two ports sharing a small total output is slower than one port with a healthy budget. Check the per-port figure and the combined figure, and remember that both drop when every port is in use.
Charging standards your devices support
USB Power Delivery on a USB-C port is what most recent phones, tablets and laptops negotiate with. Quick Charge is common on Android phones. A charger that supports the standard your phone uses will charge quickly; one that does not will fall back to basic 5V.
Port types
USB-C is now the default on new phones in India; USB-A remains useful for dashcams, older phones and accessory cables. A mixed pair covers a family car where nobody carries the same cable.
Build and safety
Look for over-current, over-voltage and thermal protection, and a plug that grips the socket without wobbling. A charger that falls out over a speed breaker is a distraction and a bad connection.
Cable quality matters as much as the charger
A fast charger paired with a thin, unrated cable will not deliver fast charging. Use a cable rated for the current your charger can supply.
Using it well
Plug the charger in before starting a long navigation session rather than after the battery has already dropped, and unplug it when you park if your car keeps the socket live — some cars do, and a charger left in place will slowly draw current.
