What fog light bulbs actually do

A fog lamp sits low in the bumper and throws a wide, flat beam close to the road surface. That low mounting is the point: light aimed under the fog, dust or heavy rain instead of into it, so less of it bounces back at you. Fog lamps are not a second pair of headlights and they are not meant to be run on clear highways at night.

Choosing a fog light bulb

Socket first

Fog lamps on cars sold in India commonly use H8, H11 or H16 bulbs, and some models share the H11 socket with the low beam. The socket is listed on every product page here, and our vehicle pages show the socket verified for each supported model and year range.

Beam pattern over raw brightness

A fog bulb has to place its light source in the same position as the filament it replaces, or the reflector will scatter light upwards and dazzle everyone including you. A well-designed bulb keeps the cut-off sharp; a badly designed one just makes a bright mess.

Colour temperature

Warm white and yellow outputs are traditional for fog use because longer wavelengths scatter less in water droplets and dust. Clean white around 6000K matches the look of an LED headlight if you prefer a consistent front end.

Sealing and heat

Fog housings sit low, so they take spray, mud and stones. Look for a bulb with a compact heatsink that clears the housing and lets you refit the rubber boot properly — a boot that does not seat is how water gets in.

Fitting and aiming

Most fog bulbs can be reached from behind the bumper or through the wheel arch liner after removing a few clips. After fitting, check the beam against a wall: the top edge should be flat and clearly below the headlight cut-off. If it is not, the bulb is seated wrong or rotated.

Using fog lamps legally and sensibly

Switch fog lamps on when visibility genuinely drops and switch them off when it clears. Running them permanently is glare for oncoming drivers and gives you no benefit.

Where to buy

Frequently asked questions

Which socket do car fog lamps use?

H8, H11 and H16 are the most common on cars sold in India, and some models use the same H11 bulb for the low beam. Check the vehicle page for your model, or the marking on the base of your current bulb.

Should I choose yellow or white fog light bulbs?

Yellow and warm white scatter less in fog, dust and heavy rain, which is what fog lamps are for. White around 6000K looks consistent with LED headlights if appearance matters more to you.

Can I use fog lamps instead of headlights?

No. A fog lamp has a wide, low beam with almost no reach down the road. It is a supplement in poor visibility, not a replacement for a headlight.

Why do my new fog bulbs dazzle other drivers?

Usually the bulb is rotated or not fully seated, so the light source sits away from the reflector focus. Refit it, then check the beam on a wall — the top edge should be flat and below the headlight cut-off.

Do fog light bulbs need aiming after replacement?

The lamp aim itself does not change when you swap a bulb, but it is worth checking the pattern on a wall afterwards to confirm the new bulb is seated correctly.
